Somewhere along the line, somebody forgot to tell the general public that although it may seem funny to go to a “Gothic” club and laugh at people, you really should be able to take it when Goths go to “normal” clubs and laugh right back at you. (yes, Goths do laugh, but only when appropriate)
Here are some things you should be learning:
Screaming “freaks” from a distance is not threatening, nor is it new. Please think of something new and inventive, believe me, it’ll be appreciated.
Stares are just plain rude to anyone, not just Goths. Stare at us, expect competition. Just cause average Goths don’t follow every new trend like you, dosent mean you have to stare and point.
When driving, don’t slow and scream obsenities… either we can’t hear them over the music in our car, or we are not paying attention to anyone but ourselves. If you stop at a red-light and abuse the Goth/s crossing the street, expect to be made a fool by the Goth/s to you friends and anyone in the general vicinity. I have seen some pretty mean people fall cause a Goth found it nessasary to strike back. (Thickshake through the window anyone?)
Don’t attempt to befriend the local Goth/s because it’s cool to have Goth connections. We know what’s going on, that’s why you get ignored.
Same goes for dating, if you like us, don’t be scared. We don’t bite, unless we are allowed to and you want us to. But don’t do it to get accreditation with your friends. Most Goths know that trick all too well, and have learned from the mistake.
Say something rude or crude in passing on the street and expect either smiles and thankyous, or to have something pointed out that you really don’t want to hear. (like “gee, I thought I heard a sound emit from the pastel people” or “you look like you copped it from a three year old and a box of crayons”)
Not people who fall into the Goth persona are the same. Just as most people are not the same. There are many little sub groups under the Goth heading. Most Goths don’t even call themselves Goth anymore… black is cool, but new shades are appearing all the time, the music, self expresson, and to some extent the closeness of like minded people IS what it’s about. All with a touch of higher intelligence. Even the dumbest, bottom of the Goth food chain, ranks highly in the intelligence stakes of normal society.
GOTHIC PEOPLE ARE NOT GOING TO KILL YOU OR YOUR FAMILY. Get over it. Goths are more likely to continue walking than kill people. Only sadistic teenagers whose only thing in common with Goths is wearing black would even think of such a thing. Just because the music and style is not the same as everyone else’s, there is no need to ban it.
If your children wander over to a Goth and start chatting, don’t yank them away. Keep an eye out as you would any other stranger talking to your kid, but realise the kids just probably asking about clothes, makeup, hairstyles, music, or telling the Goth in their way how good he/she looks.
Finally, what you do to Goths, expect back. Don’t get upset because the Goth guy/girl has all the comebacks.
Enjoy your life, let others enjoy theirs, whether they be Goths or anyone else. You have your opinion, just expect to hear other people’s views, and listen.
