Ok it all started last Thursday during 4th period english. We are reading the novel “Tuck Everlasting” and at the end of the book it has a bible verse which my teacher wanted to read to the class and I not being a christian objected to this. I had a good reason being the seperation of church and state. Her argument was that the Holy Bible was a literary work which gave her the right to read and teach out of it. I do not think this is fair. I have told my parents who happen to be die hard christians and they too say it is wrong because there is a plethora of different religions other than christianity in my school ranging from athiests to satanists and pagans. As of now I am not sure what to do but if you have any suggestion or good arguments I can use against her please make a comment to me or you may e-mail me at slaughtered@darksites.com THank you for your help.

Relax. Go through it. The bible verse was a part of a book. The teacher wasn’t having a bible study! Had that verse been by Anton LaVey, or Aliester Crowley, instead of the Bible, would you have objected? What if it had been a quote from Anne Rice or Poppy Z. Brite?
The reason we have MANY of the problems we have today is intolerance. Many years ago there was a woman who put forth the notion that her children would suffer irreparable harm by being exposed to christianity…she started a chain of events that led America into the depths of “VICTIMHOOD”.
She was Madelyn Murray O’Hare. The think they found her bones a few weeks ago in Texas.
What’s the big deal? Well, when we all become victims of one thing or another, we end up spending more time looking at the lines we can’t cross (or can’t allow anyone ELSE to cross…) all day than doing the things we’re supposed to do. Like learn. Or produce a day’s work for a day’s pay. Or expand our horizons. We end up narrow-minded, and narrowly focused. We end up BEING the kind of people we don’t like! The judgemental, closed-minded dolts who cause things like Tempest Smith, and Columbine.
My advice, as an ElderGoth, is twofold…..
A) Fall not into the trap of “Victimhood”
B) Learn more….READ the Constitution, the First Amendment, AND the thoughts of people like Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Thomas Paine during the days when these papers were being written! (Not the MTV version….the real deal!)
You have what it takes. It’s up to you.
i am not sure how to respond. i am an athiest, but i wouldn’t really care if she read a bible verse. i have learned to block out what i don’t want to hear, and i have perfected it. if you don’t want the chick to read it, than tell her, as you did. if she still persists, block it out. its like that other girl said, she’s not having a bible study, just a little verse read out of a book. oh, and Heathen, it would be ok if it was Anne Rice. she kicks assage..
