I am downright fanboy giddy over the upcoming release of ALIEN: COVENANT, and I don’t know why, exactly. It just has that “old-school” feel to it for me, a return to the basics, a return to the classic. As great as ALIENS was, and is, the original ALIEN remains the greatest of all the xenomorph’s cinematic outings for me, by far. It is the closest to a classic Horror movie. A group of people, trapped in an enclosed location, with a monster. Just the one monster, alone in the spotlight. That recipe has never been improved upon.

Is it because Ridley Scott is returning to the franchise? Is that what’s got me so buzzed? Maybe. Like I said, this one just feels…different. I loved the first two films, but ALIEN 3 was just “okay.” ALIEN 4 was “meh.” I really enjoyed the first ALIEN VS. PREDATOR flick, but the sequel to that one was also a resounding “meh.” I found PROMETHEUS to be a fine film and I completely enjoyed it, but it never rang my geeky fanboy chimes. It was an entertaining, well-made film; nothing more. But I clapped at the end, when the Alien, a version of it, showed up in the final scene. I was equally thrilled when I heard that the title for the forthcoming film had been changed from PROMETHEUS 2 to ALIEN 5 (working title), then to ALIEN: COVENANT. To repeat it a second time, this one has a different vibe to it. It’s like going home again.

Please, PLEASE don’t let this movie suck…
