Jack Black makes me itch. He annoys me. While the guy IS possessed of genuine acting ability—his Carl Denham in KING KONG several years back really impressed me—he generally chooses not to use it, sticking to his shtick that I find juvenile and unfunny. Likewise, the trailers for GOOSEBUMPS looked silly to me, possibly dumb fun that I might check out when the film transitions to the discount theater. On the other hand, I was really excited about Guillermo Del Toro’s latest, CRIMSON PEAK. The commoners, though, the NORMAL people, turned out in much greater numbers to see the former, while the latter’s opening weekend is considered an industry disappointment. This is sad, because it doesn’t bode well for Del Toro’s proposed PACIFIC RIM 2 or HELLBOY 3. Studios aren’t going to invest in projects that don’t promise big returns at the box office.
I think Del Toro is a genius and I will go see any new movie he is involved with, but I do realize that his movies are for the more refined palate, the true connoisseur of Horror and dark Fantasy. The NORMAL are incapable of appreciating it. They need watered-down, dumbed-down generic fare like GOOSEBUMPS. But I’m talking to the true believers, here. If you haven’t seen CRIMSON PEAK yet, get your ass to the theater and support a true craftsman. The only way to keep artists producing their art is to PAY them for it.
