John Carpenter rips FRIDAY THE 13th

It seemed like John Carpenter was off the grid for a while there. You didn’t hear anything about him. His return to the public eye came with the announcement that he would be returning to the legendary franchise he created, HALLOWEEN, for the upcoming sequel/reboot, the reports of which are still being rightfully celebrated by genre fans everywhere. He then took advantage of having microphones put in front of his face to voice his opinions of the rival FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise, and his comments were not kind.

Thing is, he isn’t wrong. The creators of the FRIDAY movies have gone on record themselves having admitted that their films were blatant rip-offs of HALLOWEEN. The similarities are impossible to miss. A holiday with ominous undertones. A masked slasher who cannot be killed, known by his two-syllable first name. Granted Jason didn’t appear in the first FRIDAY film, and it took until the third for him to put on that trademarked hockey mask. (I expect this last can be credited to the villainous Lord Humungous in the Mel Gibson film THE ROAD WARRIOR.) But he grew into a fully-formed Michael Myers knockoff soon enough. The FRIDAY franchisers owe Carpenter a debt of gratitude. He came up with their best idea for them.
