LEGLESS CORPSE FILM FESTIVAL

It saddens me to have to admit that Alabama, my home state, has a rotten history, but we all know it right? It has left its stamp indelibly on history, and history has left its stamp on Alabama. Furthermore, there are still patches of blight here and there, though the larger infection has been largely scrubbed away—at least on the surface. Alabama isn’t known, historically-speaking, for its tolerance of minorities. Horror fans in Alabama today are certainly that, a minority. I don’t mean in any way to equate the occasional snarled nose or strange look your average fanboy has to endure from some prudish old lady to the legitimately terrible struggles faced by people of different skin color in Alabama’s past decades. No, it isn’t even close to the same thing. I only want to point out that there aren’t many people like me, all-out lovers of the macabre, ‘round these here parts.

How, then, would a festival dedicated exclusively to Independent Horror movies fare, when staged right smack-dab in the heart of the buckle of the Bible Belt, as was the LEGLESS CORPSE FILM FESTIVAL on April 23rd and 24th? The venue, SOMERVILLE PLAYHOUSE, was perfect, providing the big screen and comfy seating—and of course we can’t forget the concessions—with a sort of art-house grooviness. But since they did build it, did the people come, to paraphrase from FIELD OF DREAMS? I’m sorry to say there weren’t a lot of us there—but pleased to report that those of us who did show up comprised the “true believers” of the area, the salt of the Alabama red clay. I was proud to be counted amongst them.
