Welcome to the Cinematic Jungle, Slash

Musician Slash has recently been dipping his toes into the horror genre, producing 2013’s Nothing Left to Fear as well as upcoming film The Hell Within.

I have to admit, I tend to look cockeyed at someone who is a celebrity in one field who then decides to become a creator in another field. Take Ethan Hawke deciding to become a novelist, for example. Part of it may be the clichéd case of sour grapes; the boy hasn’t paid his dues, I figure, like all us “regular” folks who work to become writers. It’s probably analogous to the way many or most professional musicians feel about the winners of “American Idol.” They just haven’t EARNED it. Jewel deciding to write poetry isn’t quite as bad, since she does write her own songs, and song lyrics basically are poetry, but generally speaking I have no interest in supporting the creative endeavors of a celebrity who only got a book deal or whatever because he/she is a celebrity.

Hearing that Slash may be getting into the Horror business has me a little interested, though, and not just because I was a big Guns n’ Roses mark back in the day. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt; he MIGHT be good at it. He isn’t the first musician to transition to making Horror movies. Dee Snider of Twisted Sister managed it, with some degree of success. And then there’s Rob Zombie, who made a better writer/director than he ever did a singer. (Unless you count THE LORDS OF SALEM or HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES.) Does Slash have the chops for it? We’ll see.
