Doubling Down on Dumbassery

This one critic apparently didn’t like that people were making fun of him after he made the stupid comment that the original HALLOWEEN was just a ripoff of the original THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. It bothered him so much that he wrote this big diatribe about it. What he’s doing here can be seen either as clarifying his remarks or as moving the goalposts, depending on how charitable you’re inclined to be towards him.

The diatriber admits that the two movies are not at all alike. “The two films, in a way that could hardly be more obvious, are quite different,” he says, perhaps not realizing that he’d dropped his own microphone with that one sentence. But then he goes on to say “…what [HALLOWEEN] rips off—is the primal image of a slasher in a mask.” Dude. For real? That’s all you got? They both wear masks, so one is a ripoff of the other? For real, real? I guess we can say that all the Slashers, then, are ripoffs of Lon Chaney in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Hey, he wore a mask first!

Here’s how it’s done, Mr. Critic-dude: “I misspoke. My bad.” Or “You’re right. It was a flawed comparison.” Or even a simple “Mea culpa.” Lord knows I’ve said stupid stuff before, and had to own up to it. But if you double-down and try to argue that the stupid thing you said wasn’t really stupid, then you only succeed in making yourself look more stupid.
