Family Affairs, Chapter 11

Jack stood over the table with the phone in hand. Vince and Jeff sat in the living room staring at the TV. “You know, it works better with the TV on.” Jack couldn’t get his boys to cheer up. He turned his attention back to the phone when someone picked up.

“Hello.” A voice said.

“Yeah, I need to talk to Paul Fields. It’s important.”

“Please hold. I’ll transfer you.”

After being on hold for a few minutes Paul picked up, “Hello.”

“Paul, yeah it’s Jack. Listen, Leah was just taken from her home.”

“Jack? How do you know this?” Paul asked.

“Virginia just called here. She was staying with the girl and her grandmother. She thinks that he saw her, but he hasn’t taken her yet.”

“Where is she now.”

“She’s in an inn near Ankona. She didn’t know the address. She’s staying with people by the name of McRoberts.”

“Have they contacted police down there yet?”

“Storm has them battered down.”

“Alright. Jack, you know we shouldn’t send people into a possible hurricane unless it’s an evacuation, but I’ll see what I can do.”

“Thanks Paul. Keep me posted.”

“You bet.”

Jack hung up the phone and turned to his boys.

“What’d they say?” Vince asked.

“Paul’s going to send some people down there to the inn near Ankona. He’ll keep us posted.” Jack said.

“Are they going to be okay, dad?” Jeff asked.

“They’ll be fine. Carry’s a survivor. So is your mom. They’ll get out of this.”

The doorbell rang. Jack went to answer the door. A blonde lady was standing in the rain, soaking went, “Diana? What are you doing here?”

Jack’s fiancé stepped into the threshold of the house to dry off. “I was worried about you and the boys. You sounded upset when you called last, so I figured I’d come down in case you or Virginia needed help.”

“You’d think you’d have a grudge against my ex-wife.” Jack said.

“I can’t have a grudge against her. She’s my friend. Hi Vince, Jeff. How are you two doing?”

“We’re okay.” Vince said.

“Since you’re here, I might as well let you know what’s going on. We’ll talk in the kitchen.” Jack led her into the kitchen to explain what all had happened.

Author’s Note: i’m really not sure why i left this chapter in. it has no significance to the story. i guess it was an attempt to keep the rest of the family in the story, and a break between chapter 10 and chapter 12. i didn’t want them to go after each other. not the best chapter in the world, so please don’t judge the story by this chapter.

thanx for reading this far.
