Pacific Rim 2 stomps through theaters in 2017, it’s going to be massive. However, if director and mastermind Guillermo del Toro has his way, the franchise will get even bigger: he wants to bring Godzilla into the fold.
It sounds like a fanboy’s wet dream. No chance it could really happen, though—or could it? Consider a few things: Writer/director Guillermo del Toro has been talking about bringing the Big G into his PACIFIC RIM universe since before the movie even came out. The FIRST movie, that is. And why wouldn’t he? His entire vision, the Universe in which the movie takes place and its sequels will take place, is inspired directly by Japanese kaiju movies. (KAIJU is Japanese for “giant monster.” Like any of you didn’t know that.) And the king of all kaiju is Godzilla. It’s a natural fit.
There is an even better reason why this might happen, though. In the wake of Marvel’s box office dominance, shared universes are now all the rage in Hollywood. Universal is planning to bring back its classic monsters so they can all guest star in each others’ movies. And since both PACIFIC RIM and the new GODZILLA are products of the same company, Legendary, why would the studio NOT want to capitalize on such a guaranteed genre cash cow? I say, get to milking, Legendary! The world NEEDS to see this happen!
