Recently in my town of Hattiesburg Mississippi, a young man desicrated a graveyard with a sledghammer…
Hundreds of headstones were demolished and thousands upon thousands of dollars in damage were reported. I knew the young man. He was 18 and a highschool dropout. He was arested and found guilty of 282 counts of vandilism. He is now in the federil prison and he is bubba’s little Bitch. It is people like this that give goth people a bad name. The people of hatteisburg think there is a cult by the name Cradel of Filth. Now everytime is see a cop I have to duck b/c they will stop me on the road and question me about him.
That is how goths are given a bad name.
I must say; Why would it be giving goths a bad name, When according to general society (older people at least), Goths are all about death? If anything, That was an act against the gothic subculture. If there really is a cult named Cradle Of Filth, Youd think they could come up with a name that hasnt been used by a popular band? However, When it comes to trashing graveyards, Filth is right. Respect the dead, And the living. (Well, As long as they have some respect for you.

I believe people make excuses for what they do not understand, i.e. the Gothic subculture. The more educated on what that is would say, ‘Obviously, he was not Goth, that goes against what they believe in’… whereas someone a little less knowing in the ways of this subculture would claim, ‘Oh, well it had to a Goth, they are all into death and graveyards.’ It all leads back to a certain stupidity blinding the masses. What they know nothing about, they tend to make up somehing that sounds right to them. It happens a lot more often than you think.

Right on Jaded. The Goths have respect for death and would clean the headstones instead of destroying them. Some people make no sense. The whole goth/Death stuff gets old. It’s like anytime some loser decides to wear black, listen to some faux ‘goth’ and does something horrific he’s suddenly Goth.When i was young(ages ago)Goth was totally underground(and Punk was unpopular)and nothing stuff like the headstone bashing would have been attributed to a moron with nothing else to do.Anyways, you were on the money.
I agree with you both!! Goths are just blamed for this because of the whole death thing….it sucks..but it’s true!!

Obviously the people of your town are handling this the wrong way. Instead of blaming his actions on the goth subculture, they should be trying to figure out how that young man became so disturbed.
Call me insenitive if you wish, but it sounds as if the man in question has gotten exactly what he deserved. The thing I try to keep in mind when dealing with those of different beliefs is that most of us have lost someone we care for. Even on my worst day I would not even think of committing that act.

But society won’t…because it’s easier to blame it on Gothic subculture or whoever (just like they blamed Columbine on Marilyn Manson etc….) than admit that this young man and therefore his actions were a product of their Christian(?) society….

Manners compel me to reply against my better judgement.My answer will be opaque in nature and will not allow any sinister thread to start. “faux goth” was a refernce to news media definitions of that genre.The majority of footage shows the perpetrators of the crimes wearing metal group shirts and much of the music thee media describes is just heavy metal/death metal. THAT is not goth.Short review-the media lies and sensationalizes what the public does not understand(once metal was accepted,goth became the scapegoat).Specific examples are not important because that’s too far off the topic. anyways, hope this helped.Blessed be.
umm….sorry if i sound really stupid…but where i come from theres a band called Cradel of Filth!!.I dont think people should judge him because he is a goth or a highschool drop out but acctualy think about what made him want to do that in the first place. Most people believe have images of goths as people who worship satan or smoke weed!…most of that is down to culture. so people like the guy u know dot give goths a bad name…mostly its people who have never met or spoken to one in there whole lives…this has now become very boring so im going to shut up now! bye ~liz~
