Greatness

not one of my best, and by no means my worst

I am the Greatness that innocence fears.
The edge of the Earth; the end of your years.
My reality makes you panic
And my breath makes you afraid,

If you come close enough
I’ll show you true darkness.
I will touch you and stain you and mark you with need.
Terrify you, deny you and scar you with need.

I am what parents warn against
I stuck the spear in Christ-
You cannot comprehend the pain
Of looking in my eyes.
I can take on many forms
You will never recognise me,
I could be the one you love
Or the drug that flows inside you.

When I take you
(And I will take you)
There will be suffering and madness.
You will scream for your escape
Taking pills to combat sadness.
Nothing can resist my teeth
And nothing can live without me.
I am the Greatness that can give you relief
Of this world
But still you will not be free.
