Haunted Slumber

A gentle shaking of her shoulder awoke her from her daydream. ‘Shit’ she thought ‘ I’m going crazy, these dreams are getting far to real.’ She turned and looked at her friend who had sat down next to her, and was now helping herself to half of her untouched sandwich.

‘Hey Saigh’. The girl smiled, ‘Looks like you were off with the fairies again’,
If only it were the fairies she thought.
‘I was only kidding’ said Saigh when she noticed the saddened look on Erine’s face.
‘I know you were kidding, I’m sorry, I just have a lot on my mind’,
‘Obviously not your sandwich’ as she started in on the second half.
‘Help yourself to the rest, I gotta go to class’
‘You free tonight? I wanna check out this new club and I don’t wanna go by myself, you know what those freaks are like’
‘Ha ha’ she said sarcastically, Saigh was making another jab at her appearance. Ok so maybe the pentagram pendant and the black clothes did seem to make people think she was a Satanist, but that was hardly the case. However she hardly made an effort to change people’s minds about it. Fear was power over the rest, why give up that?
‘Yeah ill go, I don’t wanna stay out too late though, got a lot of reading to do, that physics paper is a killer’
‘Sweet, Ill pick you up outside your apartment around 9pm’
‘See you then’ She grabbed her Physics text and headed off to her lecture.

Her lecture was full of straight-laced types, she sat at the back, the spot were the ‘rebels’ sat. Out of the direct eyesight of the lecturer so she would not be called on to answer a problem. Here she could daydream all she wanted. Up until a few weeks ago that was. It started off pretty normal, in a bad mood, cause she was out late, up early and severe lacking the necessary caffeine intake to survive the days lectures, which led to her dreaming of beating the shit out of a group of the students to the left of her, an expression of her anger she thought. As the days and dreams had gone by they started to get more and more distressing, violent and tormenting. She couldn’t daydream now without seeing the mangled faces of her classmates and feeling the desire to sink her teeth into their flesh and eat until she was full. They left her feeling sickened and scared. She had to talk to someone, her schoolwork was going down the toilet, she wasn’t sleeping properly, and she had hardly been eating in the last week.
Erine turned and looked at the clock waiting till the lecture was finished. Since it was only 1pm she thought she might as well go home and try to catch a few hours sleep, before Saigh showed up.
When she reached her apartment she headed straight for the bathroom, dumping her bag and books in random directions. She flung open the cabinet and searched among the shelves for the strongest sedative she could find. She grabbed a bottle, filled with some white pills, which belonged to her flatmate. After tipping a few into her hand she walked into the kitchen to grab a glass of water. Erine turned on the tap and while she waited for her glass to fill, she stared out the window, at the road and the old women walking down the footpath, the images became red and she could hear screaming, she felt the snapping of bones in her hands, the cold stares of corpses watching her as she went after yet another student. The road suddenly came back into focus as the cold water found it’s way out of the glass and onto her hands.
‘Oh my god’ Erine said. She waited until her breathing returned to normal, and took a few sips of the water.
‘They’re getting worse’…
