Jason is an Alien!

Continuing with the debate over whether or not Jason is a Deadite, powered by the Necronomicon (as depicted in the Evil Dead franchise), I went back and rewatched JASON GOES TO HELL: THE FINAL FRIDAY. I can’t say it was much better than I remembered it being. I did enjoy it much more this go-round, without any expectations or preconceived notions on my part. I saw a dozen, at least, ways in which it could have been executed more effectively. The IDEA wasn’t bad. It stumbled on the follow-through.

As it so happened, and it was not all deliberate on my part, I also watched the 1987 Horror flick THE HIDDEN. I chose the latter because I’d never seen it, and because I am jonesing for TWIN PEAKS, and THE HIDDEN stars a young Kyle MacLachlan–as an FBI agent! From Washington State! Just like Agent Cooper! (Unlike Dale Cooper, MacLachlan’s character in the film is an alien posing as a human in order to track down the evil alien that killed his, or its, family.) Viewing the two films so close together, I couldn’t help but be struck by the similarities. The Big Evil in THE HIDDEN is a slug-like alien that slips from human host body to host body, killing as it goes, and pursued by another alien posing as an FBI agent. In JASON GOES TO HELL we learn that Jason’s mind is contained in a slug-like demon that slips from human host body to host body, killing as it goes, and pursued by a bounty hunter. Hmm. Is this a case of accidental imitation, or did writer/ director Adam Marcus deliberately rip off THE HIDDEN when creating his FRIDAY film?
