I was too young to be aware of it when JAWS first debuted in theaters. When it got re-released a couple of years later, that was when it came on my radar. I remember hearing my aunt telling my Mom about how she and my uncle had taken my young cousin to see it and he’d spent the majority of the movie cowering in the floorboard. I heard the other kids in first grade talking about it. I begged and begged to go see it, but to no avail. I had to wait until it came out on television to see it. I did, however, find a paperback copy of the novel at a garage sale, and my Mom bought it for me. I guess she figured if it was a book, it was safe. Little did she know.

As JAWS was probably the first movie I ever clamored to go see in the theater (the other possible contender is STAR WARS), it holds a special place in my heart. I did, just a couple of years ago, get to see the movie on the big screen when a local theater held a special showing. Next up on my bucket list would be to watch it while afloat in the water, at an event like the one Alamo Drafthouse and FandangoNOW recently staged. They even had a makeup artist in residence to apply fake shark bites. Y’know, there’s a water park not too far from where I live. I wonder if I can talk ’em into doing something like this…
