I’m a well-informed Horror geek. That’s not boasting; it’s a simple statement of fact. I don’t claim to be the most knowledgeable fanboy in the world, but I know a good deal more than the average person. Even so, I confess that I’d never heard about Jean Claude Van Damme being up for the role of the Predator in the movie of the same name. But he was, and there is photographic evidence to prove it. Is that Jean Claude in the photo above? It’s supposed to be. That IS the original suit for the Predator, before they brought Stan Winston in to design a new one. This one looks like it should star in a low-budget, silly but fun monster movie, but it doesn’t in any way measure up to the Predator design we all know and love.
Speaking of measuring up…
Jean Claude Van Damme is not tall. He isn’t really short, but he’s of average height. Kevin Peter Hall, who ended up playing the Predator, was over seven feet tall. How would it have worked if the Predator was shorter than Arnold Schwarzenegger?
According to the folks over at BloodyDisgusting.com (and congrats on the scoop, guys), Van Damme got himself fired from the production so that he could go make BLOODSPORT. And since we all know how PREDATOR turned out, I’d call it a win/win situation.
