Hey, there are so many Horror icons appearing in this movie, it qualifies for inclusion here. Freddy, the Alien, King Kong, Chucky, Mechagodzilla, the Overlook Hotel, the creepy twins, and the old lady from THE SHINING, Beetlejuice, Christine, Jason, the Cyclops from THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, and a Madball. (The latter made me squeal like a little girl when it popped up onscreen.) If you’re a Horror mark, and especially a Horror mark who grew up in the 80s like I did, I don’t need to tell you anything else about this movie to make you want to see it. Fortunately, READY PLAYER ONE is also a damn great film. The story is there, the acting, the heart. And that’s in addition to the amazing visuals, which one simply must experience on the big screen. Do NOT wait for this one to come out on video. Get your ass to a theater!
I only have a couple’a (small) complaints about the film. Without giving too much away, let’s just say there was a sequence at the end where the bad guy has the opportunity to do a thing, exactly the sort of thing a bad guy would do, yet restrains himself. There is nothing in the film to suggest this character is anything other than an evil slimeball. It doesn’t fit to have his conscience kick in at the last minute. (One could argue that it wasn’t his conscience; rather he was stricken with awe. Even if this is the case, it doesn’t quite fit.) Also, the film’s other non-VR villain survives something in the real world that, realistically, she wouldn’t have, not without serious injury. I think this comes down to Spielberg wanting to keep his movie bloodless; he wanted all the violence to be VR violence. You never really see anybody die onscreen. I get that. But t’ain’t realistic. These are minuscule flaws, though, scarce noticeable amidst the plethora of things the film gets right. See it.
