“Don’t worry.” Kyle said. “You’ll get past him.”
Shane nodded and looked down at Assandra’s motionless body. She looks so beautiful that way, he thought. Shane carefully put Assandra down on the floor and put his boots on. He lifted her back up and nodded toward the door. Kyle opened the door and let Shane go out first. Shane cautiously walked down the stairs with Kyle behind him making sure he didn’t fall.
When they reached the front door, Kyle opened it and they headed for the car, quickly but quietly. Before they could reach the car, SHane’s father appeared in the doorway. He pulled a glock from his pocket and pointed it at Shane’s back. He pulled the trigger but the bullet swirved past Shane’s head.
“Oh Shit.” he whispered.
But they didn’t stop, they continued toward the car. Kyle yanked open the back door and Shane climbed in. Kyle slammed the door shut and ran to the driver’s side. He jumped in and dug through his pocket for his keys.
Shane’s father pulled the trigger a second time and it went through the passenger side window, landing in Kyle’s right shoulder.
“Damn-it!” he yelled.
He finally found his keys, jammed them into the ignition, started the car, and drove off. His heart was beating faster than how fast his car was going. But at least he was away. Away from the prison and his brother was with him. Shane’s heart was beating as fast as Kyle’s maybe faster but he was so glad to be away.
But he wished that he was shot instead of Kyle. At least they’ll make it to the hospital. Shane glanced down at Assandra. He hugged her close.
They drove along the highway in silence but every now and then Kyle glanced back at Shane and Assandra through his rear view mirror. He found Shane hugging Assandra close. And of coarse, Shane would get the feeling he was being watched so he layed Assandra back down on his lap.
Finally, they made it to the hospital and Kyle parked in the emergency section. They quickly got out of the car and walked quickly to the entrance. When they arrived inside, a few nurses notced the problem and ran over.
They placed her onto a stretcher and quickly led her to one of the operation rooms. Shane tried to follow but the nurse insistedly told him to stay in the waiting room, that she would be ok. So he did. Kyle’s foster father found them and ran over.
“What happened?” he asked, concerned.
“Shane’s girlfriend was stabbed by her father.” Kyle said.
“Ok, I’ll take care of it.” he said. “Stay here.”
He ran to the operation room where Assandra was and went inside.
“What do we have?” he asked automatically.
“Severe stab wounds in the stomach and the right side.” answered one of the nurses.
“Ok. She will need stitches. C’mon, let’s get to work.” Kyle’s father said.
So the nurses and assistant doctors took out the needle and thread and began stitching Assandra’s wounds. After about a hour and a half of work, she was finished and moved to the recovery room.
Kyle’s father walked up to him and Shane happily.
“She’s going to be ok. She just had to get fifty-seven stitches.” Kyle’s father said.
Shane’s eyes went wide. “Wow. That’s a lot.”
“Kyle, what hapened to your arm?” Kyle’s father asked.
“I was shot.” Kyle answered.
“I’ll get it cleaned up.”
“Thanks. Oh, dad, this is Shane. My real brother. The one I had to leave behind.” Kyle said
Kyle’s dad held out his hand to Shane.
“I’m Mr. Malen. I’ve heard a lot about you, Shane. And your father. You’re are welcome to stay with us.”
Shane shook Mr. Malen’s hand but then hugged him.
“Thank you.” he said.
Then, Shane’s father walked through the entrance of the hospital…..
