Robert Englund suggested recently that he might be willing to do one more NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET movie. “I think they want to reboot the franchise, but they’re gonna need a new actor…to play Freddy because they’re gonna have to do eight of them. I might have one left in me…yeah…” Englund told the folks at Access Live. Okay, I get that Robert wouldn’t want to sign on for a whole new franchise. He’s 71 years old and, while Freddy may be immortal, Robert Englund unfortunately isn’t. But one more for the road? Why not? As I’ve said before, all they’d need him for would be the close-ups. They need his face and his voice. A stuntman could do all the action shots. And underneath all that makeup, it hardly matters how many wrinkles the man might have.
Englund has previously suggested a terrific idea for a new NIGHTMARE movie, one in which Freddy appears in different forms for different people. This would allow multiple actors to portray the razor-gloved ghost. One of them could easily be Englund. This would also allow for a transitioning to a new actor for a new series of films. Maybe they could show Freddy getting “regressed” somehow to back when he was a living human, a young man, and then you have the new actor step in. Then turn him back into the crispy Freddy we all know and love. Redesign the Freddy makeup a bit and there you go. Considering how much money HALLOWEEN just made by going back to its roots, don’t be surprised to see this happen in the near future.
