Robert Englund returns as Freddy Krueger! Sorta!

A new documentary, NIGHTMARES IN THE MAKEUP CHAIR, will feature everyone’s favorite knife-fingered, pun-making, Christmas-sweater-and-fedora wearing, crispy-faced slasher, Robert Englund, returning to the role he made famous. No, not just made famous. CREATED. EMBODIED. Robert Englund IS Freddy Krueger. There will never be another; all others are pretenders. Don’t get me wrong. I dig Jackie Earl Haley. He was fantastic as Rorschach in WATCHMEN. (He was also pitifully wasted in that Tim Burton onscreen abortion starring Johnny Depp—I know, that’s like a dozen movies or more, but there was only one in which Haley appeared. I refuse to even name it, but you can figure it out.) He’s a talented actor. But even his momma would have to admit that his portrayal of Freddy was inferior to Englund’s.

While we all wait to see what the next installment of the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET will be—and if they have any sense at all, they will get Englund back in the fedora in some way, shape, or form—we can enjoy watching Englund return to his most famous role in the documentary. It will appeal mostly to Horror cinephiliacs (I coined that term myself, to set us apart from the regular “cinephiles.” Like it?) who enjoy all the technical aspects of genre moviemaking. There is enough non-technical material there, however, to appeal to the casual fan, and Krueger’s—excuse me, Englund’s—charisma shines through, even when he’s making casual conversation. Hurry back to Elm Street, Bob. We miss you!
