“I am you in your dream,” the words whispered again,” reality is changing, rearranging as I speak.” The voice faded, attention diverted to the sparsely clouded sky. Ribbons of light trailing to the ground. Racing across the field, horizon to horizon. Nothing blocked the view except a single oak tree, set dead center on the only slope in sight.
It’s massive trunk stretched up to long branches curling up and down over the area. Thick roots rising out of the ground like a swimming snake frozen in time. He sat there alone, taking in the view, perched on one of the gnarled roots. A lone dark figure, covered and hooded in a black cloak. He shifted his weight and sighed as the whisper came again, “there’s no-one else like you.”
“Of course there isn’t,” he thought aloud, ” who else has a name like mine. . . Chimera.” He spoke the words like anathema. “How many children are born while their junkie mother is shooting up another hit. Surprised I’m even still alive.” He whispered the last line at a barely audible mumble.
“You will cut through the lines of destiny and rage.” The whisper came again shattering his thoughts. The voice had begun only a few days ago, seeming to grow in urgency every day that passed. It all started when he found that locked chest in his great great grandfather’s cellar wall. Upon opening it, he found inside a steel bound tome and a small black bottle attached to a silver chain. When observed closely, the bottle seemed to steal the light around it, as if it were simply the absence of it. The tomb, bound in steel, could only be read in a mirror. All the writings were backwards, and near the end of the book was a journal. Strangely, the first entry started 2 years later. The last entry was short and explanatory. It follows as:
Date; after 3000 A.D. I presume,
In a last desperate effort, I have caused the apocalypse. Everything is gone, all of what once was Earth. And I, am trapped in the void. I haven’t the energy left to reverse the tragedy I have caused. Barely, have enough time to write this before my own life ceases to continue. In a last attempt, I am preserving my essence. Then sending it back along with this tomb. Mayhaps then, whoso ever reads this will take my charge. Drink of my essence and become the seer. Hunt down Griffin before he causes this chain of events. . . .before. . . .be careful. . .heed. . . .I’m out of time. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Then there is a scrawled signature. It seems as if it reads ‘Jade’.
The figure shook his head, leaning heavily on the tree, looking down at the silver chain around his neck. Grasping the black bottle in hand, thoughts racing as to whether or not he should drink. It could be poison his mind screamed, or nothing at all could happen, but if the passages were right. . . .could he handle another’s essence under his skin? The book thoroughly explained the feeling, and many of the happenings when he was inside of Griffin’s mind. Solid power, at the cost of his sanity more than likely.
The whisper came again, taunting, “Drink and live, fuel your dreams, recreate your mind.”
Such curiosity, as only fear held him back. Then time seemed to freeze. What did he have to lose? His life? He laughed silently pulling the cork from the bottle, “What the hell, got nothin’ to lose.” But what came forth was completely unexpected. Green smoke, thick and bitter smelling poured from the bottle as if compressed a thousand fold. Everything around him went black as if the sun had been turned off. The smoke giving off a bright luminescence as he stood there, watching, waiting. It snaked around him, spiraling his body upwards. Then shot into his nose and mouth. Head shot back, arms spread , and falling to his knees with a silent scream. Face contorted in terror. The bottle shattered in his hand leaving not gashes. . . but scars. The smoke then vanished, completing it’s forced entry into his lungs. Soon after, the darkness faded back to the field and clouded sky. He lay there, eyes wide and staring upwards, blank. The green smoke swirling inside the globe of his eyes, then settling to leave his once pale blue eyes a deep green. He bolted upright, skin still tingling, mind reeling with new knowledge.
“Oh, my fucking god,” he said in a different sounding voice than his own, “That was way better than any drug I’ve ever taken.” Then laughed shortly, the silence fading back as the ringing in his ears stopped.
“Well,” he whispered, ” lets give this a try and see if it really works.”
“Yes, shall we?” the voice whispered, Chimera ignoring it raising one scarred hand. Knew for some reason that he need not speak the words, though did anyway. “Ice,” as his hand went cold, lowering to the ground. A sheen of frost spreading across the field to make a crystalline lake all around him. “That was too easy. . .Raquel’s house,” he spoke, willing himself to be there, but nothing happened. “Damn it, looks like I’ll have to walk, and practice this,” he started as the whisper laughed, echoing in his mind.
“Shut the f. . .,” he stopped, smiling now, “banished,” he spoke, willing the voice to just cease to exist. He waited, and began the long walk back to town.
Chimera set a steady pace, thinking, and absently testing his new found abilities on the way. “So who is this griffin character that I’m supposed to kill?” he pondered as a rabbit darted across his path, startled by his appearance. It didn’t stand a chance. Bursting into flames in mid stride, tumbling to a stop screaming. Burning. As if Chimera had lost all remorse for life on this day.
“Rain,” and so it did. Thick clouds formed overhead out of no-where, blocking out the sun. Thunder crashed and the rain poured, showering him. Beads of water trailing down his body, cloak beginning to soak.
He then stopped walking, as if the rain had caused him to remember something.
“Hold it, Chimera,” he said snapping out of his trance, “remember who you are, don’t let this shit get to your head so easily.” Concentrated, trying the teleport tactic again.

A female scream reverberated through the room. “Chimera,” she yelled, heart pounding in her chest, ” how the hell did you get there?! In my room standing there. . . .what the fuk!?”
It worked was his first thought. Then said calmly, “chill, Raquel, I need to show you something.” She stared at him, a puzzled look on her face, the anger fading quickly. It was hard to get angry at Chimera, after all he had done for her.
When she didn’t respond he spoke, “Turn off the lights.”
“Why?”
“You’ll see,” he stood, stepping over the fallen stool to hit the light switch.
“You better not. . .”
He cut her short, “I’m not, come here.” She sighed wishing she knew what had gotten into him and how the hell he did that appearing trick in her house. Then she stood, walked to him and crouched on the floor.
He hadn’t tried it yet, but he knew he could. ‘If I can change reality, I can make illusion,’ he thought to himself.
“Watch,” he said cupping his hands in a ball. Slowly drew them apart into a half sphere. Light flooded the near pitch black room. The red walls glinting like new paint. The TV reflecting. Chandelier sparkling. For in his outstretched hand he held a perfectly formed star from some far away universe. Could even see the solar flares stretching out into space.
She gasped, “oh, Chimera, its beautiful. . . .but how?”
“Shhhhh,” he hushed her, “Just watch.”
The star became smaller as new planets winked into view. It grew out of his hand, new solar systems spreading in the air across the room. Everything in the galaxy laid bare for them to see. Millions of stars and planets. A comet flared to life, racing across their eyes, then burst into a nova as it collided with a planet.
Chimera stole a quick glance at her to see her reaction. Tears were forming in those wide, awe stricken eyes. She leaned over giving him a hug, kissing him deeply. Drew back for a moment staring into each others eyes. Her pale green meeting his.
She gasped again, “Chimera, your eyes.” He blinked, looking away, ” It was part of the transformation.”
“Trans. . .formation?” she spoke slowly.
“I’m not quite sure myself, though what I do know. . .is that I took upon the essence of. . .Jade I think. The bottle, Raquel. You saw me wearing it these past few days..”
“You mean. . .what the book said was true?”
“Yes”
They became silent for a time, staring at the stars. The worlds before them, limitless possibilities to think upon.
“Are you hurt?” she said finally, concern mirroring in her face.
“I’m ok, it actually felt good,” he paused, “lets go for a walk, I’ll show you some more.”
“At least take off the cloak, it’s soaked.”
So he blinked twice and it was dry. She shook her head, still trying to understand what was happening. They stood without another word and went out the door.
Their trip to the park was short, uneventful. A few odd stares his way because of the cloak, but for the most part, a smooth walk.
When they had arrived and were walking quietly through the fields, something seemed wrong. It was nearing the end of spring, midday, the sun sat high upon the clouds. The storm he called earlier already past. It was the silence that seemed wrong, way too quiet for this time of year. No birds or insects, no squirrels running through the trees. Only Chimera noticed it, keeping the information to himself, not wanting to cause worry where there need not be.
The walk took them to the center of the park. A forested alcove overlooking a small shaded lake. They settled down at the concrete table under an old cypress tree. No-one else around, no distractions, just a comforting atmosphere.
At a simple thought from Chimera, dolphins leapt out of the water, splashing back down. Bright blue, shining in the sunlight. On the second jump, something roiled under the lake. Large jaws swept up, engulfing the mammalian fish. White teeth shining red, it swung its head in their direction. Staring with the eyes of a long forgotten predator.
Raquel ducked down behind Chimera, apparently frightened. “Why did you. . .make it go away!” She pleaded, but Chimera didn’t move, wide eyed.
“I didn’t call it here, I didn’t. . .make that. . .thing.”
“Wwhat?” she whispered, stuttering over her next words, failing to say anything more.
“Be gone,” Chimera spit out waving a hand as if the creature were but a mouse. Reality rippled and bubbled at his attempt to banish it, but the thing still stood there. Watching, waiting for something. So Chimera stood up.
“Wait here, Raquel,” he spoke, not glancing back at her and went forward to confront this new intrusion into his life. Not altogether sure of what his next move was, though it was easily identified as having something to do with his new gift.
“CHIMERA,” a voice broke into his mind like the breaking of glass. He shook his head taking a glance at Raquel. She seemed like she hadn’t heard anything.
“CHIMERA,” it boomed again demanding his attention, “SPEAK MY NAME.”
“Griffin?” he spoke not knowing. Then something unseen hit him in the face like a sledgehammer knocking his feet from under him.
“SPEAK MY NAME,” it blasted into his mind like a freight train, as if growing impatient.. Chimera flinched, grabbing both sides of his head.
“Lucifer,” Raquel spoke out quietly. Answering an unspoken question to herself.
The creatures one eye stayed on Chimera, the other rolling to the side staring straight at her. Then the huge dragon like head threw back in a hideous laugh.
Raquel just couldn’t take it, her mind wracked with terror. Bolted up, running away into the woods, but had only gotten twenty feet before slamming into some invisible barrier. Into it at full speed crumpling in a heap on the ground.
“YOU SHALL CALL ME LEVIATHAN IF YOU SO DESIRE.”
‘Two can play at this game,’ Chimera thought.
“WHAT, HATH YOU COME HERE FOR,” He boomed back with everything he had, at least trying to give it a headache, but it only blinked.
“TO HALT YOUR QUEST, YOU CANNOT CHANGE DESTINY. THE FUTURE IS ALREADY PLANNED AS SET AS YOUR OWN DEATH AND JADE’S.” it screamed in Chimera’s mind causing him to reel, eyes rolling in to his head. Blood dripping from his nose. Regaining his composure as quickly as possible.
Angrily wiping the blood away he yelled, “And how, perchance, do you expect to stop us?!”
(Mistake, because when he said ‘us’ Jade had come back)
The creature moved a little closer, this time speaking aloud, its breath fetid as it roared out, “To Devour!” At the same time chanting in his mind “LIFE FEEDS ON LIFE FEEDS ON LIFE FEEDS ON LIFE. . .”
Chimera went cold as the beast crept towards him. “The hell you will, bastard,” he screamed. The anger and fear fueling him in a way he never felt before. Steam began to rise from the lake, beginning to boil. Small green flames started to take on his shoulder, racing across his arms. Spreading until the whole of his frame was afire, and still the leviathan crept closer. Chimera’s frustration at not being able to stop it turned to rage. His newfound powers, merely hours old now, coursed through his veins like ice. The green flames flared up turning white, hot as the sun. Concrete from the table he stood near began to melt, dripping to the ground. His body shuddered, knew he couldn’t handle much more.
As beast and seer, no more than feet away, locked eyes they both stopped. Staring at each other through the haze of heat. Finally the Leviathan spoke one word that triggered Chimera to push it too far. “DIE” it said as Chimera screamed, the flames rose higher turning a purple and blood red mix, Jade was taking over. Suddenly chaos became him. Arms thrown forward sending the sphere of fire directly at the creature’s upraised head. As soon as the last of it left his fingertips, he collapsed, spend and exhausted in more ways than one. The fireball flared into a nova engulfing Leviathan. A muffled roar, a cloud of smoke, then silence. Small flickerings of flame set out on the lake, but the beast was gone. Dead? Fleeing? Who knows, who cares. It was gone.
“Chimera,” Raquel coughed out, stumbling towards him. The look on her face composed of pure horror. Smoke rose from his body, burns all over him. He looked dead on first glance, but after checking his pulse, wiping away tears, she hugged him. And he screamed, the burns apparently hurt.
“Help me up,” he whispered hoarsely. So she did, set him on the half melted concrete table, now cooled.
“Look away, please,” he said slightly stronger, “You don’t want to se this I imagine.” Trailers of smoke still rising form his skin. So hesitantly she walked away, towards the roiling body of water. Vainly searching for the massive corpse that should have been there. From behind her, she heard him scream. A terrible shout of pain, closing her eyes tightly, blinking away tears. Then jumped, startled, as a hand set on her shoulder. Turning to see Chimera just as he had been half an hour ago.
“We’ve had enough of adventure today, I believe,” he said sarcastically as if nothing had happened.” Lets go get a bite to eat, a hit, and relax for awhile.
So they strode off, out of the park, towards home. Hoping for a good nights rest.
