The two of them stood just inside the walls of the house. Neither of them wanting to say anything about the place first. Finally one of them, Shawn, spoke up.
“Go on in Will.”
Will looked at him like he had lost every bit of sense he once had.
“You know just as well as I do that anyone that goes in there never comes back out” Will said.
“Yeah, but your always saying how strong and brave you are. So why don’t you go ahead and prove it”
“Not a chance”
“Aww, you’re not afraid of a little house are ya?” Shawn asked him.
Will looked back at the house and said “A little house, no, but this is no little house. They say it has been here since before our great-grandparents, and they wouldn’t even go in there.”
After arguing for about another ten minutes they both stopped.
“Did you hear that?” Shawn asked.
“Yeah I did hear something.” Will said.
Shawn stuck up to the wall and listened carefully. After a few moments he mouthed the words “someone is on the other side” He then reached around and grabbed the boy on the other side and pulled him back to their side of the wall.
“What do you think your doing here?” Shawn asked Ulric.
Ulric was a scrawny little thing that everyone picked on, and no one would hang around with.
“I just wanted to see what you two were doing.” Ulric said.
“Well you can’t stay here…” Will began to say, but was quickly cut off by Shawn.
“Okay you want to see what we were doing huh. Well we were just getting ready to go in that house. But… since you are here why don’t you go on in first?”
“B..B..But I was told not to go in there.”
“Come on we will be right behind you” Will said.
“Yeah and this will be a good chance to us that you aren’t the little wimp everyone says you are” Shawn chimed in.
“Well okay, but you will be right behind me right?…… Right?”
“Oh uh yeah. We’re gonna be right there at your back” Shawn said.
So Ulric started up the steps to the front door. Both boys right behind him like they said they would be. However as soon as they got to the front door they shoved Ulric inside, and put both their full weights against the door.
“HEY. Let me out. Come on, this isn’t funny. Come on guys.”
After a few more minutes of protesting all was quiet.
“Huh, what do you think happened?” Will asked.
“Aww he is probably playing around so we will open the door for him.” Shawn stated.
“Yeah you’re probably right.”
“We will wait a few more minutes, then let the little wuss out.” Shawn said.
After fifteen minutes they still didn’t hear anything. So they slowly opened the door. However after poking their heads just inside the door neither of them could see Ulric anywhere.
“Well what should we do now?” Will asked.
“Umm I guess as long as we stay right by the door we can step inside and look for him.”
They both stepped inside the door. Just as they got past the door a strong wind slammed the door behind them. Both boys spun around with a start. Shawn rushed to the door and pulled on it with all his strength, but to no avail.
“Damn it’s stuck” Shawn said.
“Well open it!” Will screamed.
“I am trying. The wind must have jammed it shut.”
“What do we do now?” Will asked.
“Maybe there is another door at the back of the house. Lets get back there quick. I don’t want to be in this house any longer than I have to be.” Shawn said.
They both began running towards the back of the house. Just as the got near the back door another door flew open knocking them both to the ground. Just before they lost consciousness they saw someone step out of the room from which the door had opened.
When they regained consciousness they were in a dark room, lit only by a single candle.
“I wondered how long you two would be asleep.” Came a deep voice from the corner opposite the candle.
“W..W…Who are you?” Asked Shawn, trying to conceal his fear, but failing miserably.
“Hehehe, so you don’t recognize me do you. Ah… not that it really matters I guess.”
As the one with the voice stepped forward the boys could see his disfigured face large canines and blood shot eyes. Upon seeing this Will passed out.
“Ha I knew he wasn’t as brave as he said he was.” The man scoffed. “Well I guess that means your first my poor friend.”
When Will came to he could hear what sounded like something being ripped in the corner. Then he saw the same horrid face step forward out of the shadows, holding what was left of his best friend. Just as he began to scream the thing lunged at him, ripping out his throat disabling any sound, aside from the gurgling noises of him drowning on his own blood. The beast just stood back and gave a wide wolfish grin.
The next morning as the sun was coming up Ulric walked from the house wiping the blood from his lips, smiling contently, full…. for the time.
